Jiří started playing tennis when he was just about 3 years old. His grandmother, who used to compete in the sport at the national level, had taught his older sister, and he wanted to follow suit.
At the youth tier, he won the doubles title at the 2019 Junior Wimbledon Championships. He had achieved a combined (singles and doubles) career-high world junior ranking of number 10 in March 2019.
At the 2022 ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament (an ATP Tour 500 (the 4th-highest tier of tournaments on the ATP Tour) event), as a qualifier, Jiří shocked 5th seed Denis Shapovalov in straight sets in the 1st round. It was his first main draw match in a tournament that was a part of the ATP Tour (a worldwide top-tier tennis tour for men organized by the ATP).
He went on to reach the semi-final stage of the tournament where he was defeated by top seed Stefanos Tsitsipas. Jiří was the lowest-ranked semi-finalist at this tournament (also known as the Rotterdam Open) since 1995. His performance moved him to world number 95 on February 14, 2022 – 42 positions up the official ATP singles rankings.
In November 2022, he reached the final match of the Next Generation ATP Finals (a year-end men’s youth exhibition tennis tournament (played annually since 2017, except 2020) – contested by the 8 highest-ranked 21-and-under singles players on the season’s ATP Tour).
At the 2023 Australian Open, Jiří reached the 2nd round of the singles event of a Grand Slam tournament (Australian Open/French Open/Wimbledon Championship/US Open) for the first time in his career. He continued his fairytale tournament and went on to upset 6th seed and then world number 7 Félix Auger-Aliassime in the 4th round.
This was the first win of his career over a player ranked in the ‘Top 10’ of the official ATP singles rankings. Jiří was defeated in the tournament’s quarter-final stage by 3rd seed and eventual runner-up Stefanos Tsitsipas. His breakthrough performance in this tournament moved him to world number 39 on January 30, 2023 – more than 30 positions up the official ATP singles rankings.
In February 2023, at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open (an ATP Tour 250 (the lowest tier of tournaments on the ATP Tour) event), he shocked top seed and then world number 5 Andrey Rublev in the quarter-final stage in 3 sets. This was the second win of Jiří’s career over a player ranked in the ‘Top 10’ of the official ATP singles rankings and the first over a player ranked in the ‘Top 5’.
In June 2023, he reached the final of the doubles event of the Queen’s Club Championships (an ATP Tour 500 event) – his first appearance in the final (singles or doubles) of an ATP Tour-level tournament.
In July 2023, Jiří entered the singles event of the Croatia Open Umag (an ATP Tour 250 event) as the top seed – for the first time in his career at an ATP Tour-level tournament. Although he defeated former world number 3 Dominic Thiem in the tournament’s 2nd round, he was knocked out in the quarter-final stage.
