The show follows Marty and his brother Rick, who are both originally from Kingsford, Michigan, as they attempt to find a treasure that is supposedly buried on the island. Rick and Marty first became interested in the island after reading a copy of Reader's Digest in 1965. The article featured the history of a family by the name of Restall that at one point was investigating the long lost supposed treasure. Today Marty and Rick own a controlling interest in the Oak Island Tours company which is the majority owner of the island. There are many theories as to the original source of the treasure. One of the more prominent theories is that the treasure was left by North African gold merchants dating back to the 1300s.

Early Life

Martin Lagina was born on August 26, 1955, in Kingsford, Michigan, the son of George Jacob and Anna Lagina.  Lagina has one brother, Rick Lagina. Lagina graduated from Kingsford High School; in 1973. He attended Michigan Tech University, after which he started working for Amoco as a petroleum engineer. He went on to get his Juris Doctor at the University of Michigan, while working in the petroleum consulting business on the side.

Career

After obtaining his Juris Doctor in 1982, Lagina founded Terra Energy Ltd. With this company, he developed over $3 billion in natural gas resources and oil. He sold the company to CMS Energy in 1995 for a reported $58 million. He then began focusing on wind-powered energy. Lagina started a new company called Heritage Sustainable Energy which planned the biggest wind farms in Michigan. Marty remains the majority owner of HSE and he oversees the fundamental aspects of the business side of the company.

Marty Lagina has also been an executive producer of the series and starred in the reality TV series The Curse of Oak Island: Drilling Down beginning in 2016 on the History Channel.
